Letter wrote by Mathieu Schroeter in 2023
Mathieu Schroeter wrote a letter to Spedy Blupi fans in 2023 addressing the future release of source code of Speedy Blupi I/II.[1]
The summarization of this letter is:
- Mathieu become the father for the second time in 2023.
- Mathieu is interested mainly in Planet Blupi development.
- The spare time of Mathieu is limited. Releasing the source code of Speedy Blupi I/II in the future is now uncertain less likely to happen.
Hello everyone.
For this year, I have the pleasure (and I apologize to Speedy Blupi fans) of releasing the game Blupimania for Linux, macOS and Windows. Just like Planet Blupi, all the source code and artistic files are available under the GPLv3+ license.
Why not Speedy Blupi?
To understand my motivations, let's go back to 2016 when I began adapting Planet Blupi. At that time, it was Blupimania that I had in mind, and Daniel Roux had lost the game sources. So, I turned to the closest game whose sources were still available (Planet Blupi). It was years later (in 2019) that Daniel found an old CD-R backup from his 1997 Smaky. In this CD, I found the complete sources of Blupimania Smaky. In fact, I tweeted about this on September 30, 2019. The year 2019 also marked the birth of my second child. It was no longer possible for me to find free time for Blupi. It was towards the end of 2021 that I took on more substantial projects, specifically studying the source code of Blupimania to port it to Linux, macOS and Windows. It was during the years 2022 and 2023 that I was able to achieve what I had hoped for a very long time: to give a second life to this game that I personally consider the best Blupi game that has ever existed.
I hear the disappointment of Speedy Blupi fans, and I understand it. There will certainly be a new life for Speedy Blupi. But remember that everything I do for these games is on my own and without help (whether in time or financially) from Epsitec. So, it is during many evenings (when the children are asleep) that I can work on these games. Although Speedy Blupi is the most requested game, I chose above all what I enjoyed most to accomplish in my 'spare' hours. I don't yet know if I will start the Speedy Blupi project or if I will focus on one of the many other personal projects lingering in my mind. I encourage all of you to give this wonderful game, Blupimania, a chance.
